There’s a quiet magic to September in the deer woods—when bucks move like ghosts in the early light, velvet still clinging to their antlers. For bowhunters, this is one of the most unique and rewarding times to be in a stand.

Here’s how to make the most of the velvet window before it slips away.

September isn’t just about early access—it’s about smart hunting.

             Lower pressure, more patterned deer.

           Scouting: Trail Cameras are King

Early season success = solid scouting. Deploy trail cams in August and check them sparingly.

           Best Practices:

            Use

            cell cams

             to reduce pressure.

            Aim toward

            Check

            wind direction

             even when hanging cameras.

Avoid over-checking cards. Less is more.

The heat, bugs, and brush make gear choices critical.

           Clothing:

Practice real hunting scenarios: tree stand angles, heat, and wind.

Range your lanes in advance—leaves are still thick.

Velvet buck hunting isn’t about luck—it’s about preparation, patience, and capitalizing on one of the most consistent times in the whitetail calendar.

Looking Forward: August/September Beach Fishing for Red Drum and Cobia

As the summer heat begins to fade and the first hints of fall creep into the air, beach anglers know one thing—September is prime time for chasing two of the most exciting inshore species on the East and Gulf Coasts: red drum and cobia. Whether you're casting into the surf from the Carolinas or the Florida Panhandle, this month offers a golden window to hook into something big, fast, and unforgettable.

           Why September?

September marks a transitional period. Water temperatures start to drop just enough to kick off the fall migration, sparking feeding frenzies in both red drum and cobia. Baitfish like mullet and menhaden begin moving along the coast, drawing predators close to shore—right into casting range for beach anglers.

Red Drum: The Surf King's Return

Also known as redfish or channel bass, red drum make their fall push in September, particularly the oversized “bull” reds. These fish can reach over 40 inches and will crush a bait with brute force.

           Where to Find Them:

Look for deeper cuts and sloughs between sandbars, especially near inlets.

Outgoing tides are key—drum often wait in deeper water for baitfish to be swept out.

Structure is your friend. Jetties, points, and even pier pilings can be hotspots.

           Best Baits:

Fresh cut mullet (live if possible)

            Menhaden

            Blue crab (halved)

Artificial options: large soft plastics on jig heads, spoons, or popping corks for shallow flats near the surf

           Gear Tips:

Use a stout 10–12 foot surf rod rated for 2–6 oz weights.

30–50 lb braid or mono with a 60 lb shock leader

Circle hooks (size 6/0 to 8/0) help ensure clean hook sets and easy releases

           Cobia from the Sand?

Though cobia are more commonly targeted from boats or piers, they occasionally cruise close to shore in September, especially along the Florida Panhandle and northern Gulf Coast, following bait balls or hanging near rays.

           Spotting Cobia from the Beach:

Keep your eyes peeled for dark shapes cruising just past the breakers.

Watch for bait activity—jumping mullet or diving birds can tip you off.

Wading out can give you a better vantage and casting range.

           Best Tactics:

Sight-casting with large bucktail jigs or live eels

Tossing swimbaits or jerk shads when they’re feeding aggressively

A fast retrieve with intermittent pauses can trigger reaction bites

           Pro Tip:

Bring polarized sunglasses and climb up onto a cooler or beach cart for a better view. You’ve got to see them to catch them.

           Safety & Conservation Notes

Always handle big reds and cobia with wet hands and support their bellies—these are long-lived fish critical to the ecosystem.

Know your local regulations. Many areas have strict slot limits and seasonal closures for red drum and cobia.

Consider using barbless hooks or crimping your barbs to ease release and reduce injury.

           Final Thoughts

There’s something special about standing barefoot in the surf, rod in hand, as the sun rises and the tide rolls in. When that rod doubles over and the drag starts screaming, you’ll know why September is a month surf anglers wait for all year. Red drum and cobia aren’t just fish—they’re trophies, stories, and moments you'll never forget.

So pack your gear, grab some bait, and hit the beach this September. The fish are waiting.

By late summer, most casual anglers have packed up. The boat ramps are less crowded. The mid-morning surface slicks are still. But for hardcore freshwater anglers, this is when things get interesting. The dog days of summer push fish into patterns that reward knowledge, discipline, and creativity—and the country is full of elite fisheries ready to test your skills.

When the sun’s high and the water’s hot, most fish shift to specific, repeatable patterns—if you know where to find them.

           Key Summer Adjustments:

            Thermoclines Matter:

In lakes, many species hold just above the thermocline in oxygen-rich water.

            Shadows & Current Rule:

Shade lines, underwater springs, or flowing water stack fish.

            Reaction Over Feed:

Many bites come from instinct, not hunger. Speed, angle, and disruption become more important than scent or realism.

           Final Word: Embrace the Grind

Late summer separates hobbyists from hammers. Fish are concentrated. Conditions are stable. The bite isn’t always easy—but it’s technical, challenging, and rewarding in a way that few other parts of the season are.

This is when patterns lock in, giants show up on side imaging, and every cast is calculated. Whether you're dragging a jig on Guntersville ledges or stalking trout on the White, summer fishing rewards those who dig deep.

Get after it. Respect the fish. Respect the water. And always leave it better than you found it.

: Morels are mycorrhizal and saprobic, meaning they can form symbiotic relationships with trees or grow from decaying organic matter. That’s why they’re so picky about location—and why no one has truly figured out how to reliably cultivate them commercially.

           Facts About Morel Mushrooms

            They’re hollow inside

             – One of the best identification features! A true morel is completely hollow from stem to tip when sliced open.

            They have toxic lookalikes

             – False morels (Gyromitra species) can be dangerous or deadly. They’re often wrinkled rather than pitted, and not hollow inside.

             – In peak season, fresh morels can sell for $20–$50 per pound in local markets. Dried ones? Even more.

             – With a nutty, earthy, almost meaty flavor, morels are beloved by chefs. They're often sautéed in butter or cream sauces, sometimes stuffed or added to pasta and risotto.

Hunting for morel mushrooms is more than just a pastime—it’s a rite of spring. It's a practice that combines observation, patience, and a little bit of luck. With their short growing season and ephemeral nature, morels teach us to pay attention to the moment and savor the fleeting pleasures of wild food.

So when the nights warm up and the rains come down, grab a basket, hit the woods, and keep your eyes peeled. The morels are out there—but only for those willing to search.

For anglers who crave the freedom of a self-guided fishing trip—whether it’s chasing trout in mountain streams, casting for bass in quiet southern lakes, or battling steelhead in coastal rivers—

Whether you're after fly-fishing solitude in Montana or a weekend of pond hopping in the Ozarks, there's a Huntbnb spot ready to welcome you with rustic comfort and prime location.

One of the biggest advantages of using Huntbnb is the ability to

filter listings based on your specific needs

. Want a place with a fish cleaning station, boat access, or nearby public land? You can find it. Prefer something more off-grid, where the only noise you hear is the wind through the trees and the splash of your lure? That’s there too. These aren’t just generic vacation rentals—they’re geared for people who wake up early and don’t mind coming back muddy, wet, and grinning.

Unlike traditional guided fishing trips, a Huntbnb stay gives you the flexibility to fish

. There’s no guide pacing you through spots or telling you when it’s time to head back. If you want to chase the evening hatch or stay out until the moon rises, it’s all up to you.

For seasoned anglers or adventurous newcomers, this kind of freedom can be the most rewarding way to fish. And with locations spanning across the U.S.—from the Adirondacks to the Rockies, the Gulf Coast to the Pacific Northwest—

Want to hunt a Merriam's Turkey?

If you’ve never chased Merriam’s turkeys out west, I’m telling you right now—it’s something you absolutely need to experience. Coming from out east myself, I had no idea what I was missing until I finally made the trip to Nebraska. And let me tell you, it only took one morning to get completely hooked. That first hunt, I walked in before daylight, just trying to figure out where to set up, and suddenly the whole canyon lit up with gobbles. There had to be over a hundred birds roosted all around me. Every time a crow called, it was like a thunderstorm of gobbles crashing back at it. I’d never heard anything like it. That moment alone made the entire trip worth it, and I’ve been back three more times since—hunting with both shotgun and bow.

What makes Nebraska so special—especially the western side—is the way the terrain naturally holds birds. There aren’t a ton of big trees out there, so roosting spots are limited, which means when you find one, it’s usually loaded. I’ve had most of my success in cottonwood stands, and it's not uncommon to run into a mix of both Merriam’s and Rios. That variety just adds to the experience. Early season, especially in late March when the archery opener hits, the birds are still grouped up, and man, it can be tough. You might see a pile of turkeys but getting one to break off can take some serious patience. But once mid-April hits and they start splitting up, things really open up—you can get more aggressive, and calling gets way more effective.

Honestly, it’s become one of my favorite hunts of the year. There’s just something about that big, open country, those white-tipped Merriam’s fanned out on a ridge, and the way sound rolls through those hills—it’s addictive. Nebraska offers long seasons, multiple tag options, and plenty of public ground to explore. Whether you’re a seasoned turkey nut or just looking for something new to spark your passion again, this is the trip. I make the drive west every spring now, and if you give it one shot, I promise.....you’ll be doing the same.

Why People Hesitate to Go on DIY Hunting and Fishing Trips (and How Huntbnb Can Help)

When you think about hunting and fishing, many people imagine a peaceful retreat into nature, away from the noise and distractions of daily life. But despite the allure of this outdoor escape, a surprising number of people shy away from the idea of taking on a DIY (do-it-yourself) hunting or fishing trip. Whether it's the logistics, the lack of knowledge, or simple fears about being unprepared, many individuals find themselves hesitant to dive into these adventures. So, what exactly keeps people from embarking on DIY hunting and fishing trips, and how can Huntbnb help make these dreams a reality?

One of the primary reasons people hesitate to take a DIY hunting or fishing trip is simply not knowing where to start. There’s a wealth of knowledge required – from understanding local hunting seasons and regulations to learning how to properly use the gear. Whether it's the nuances of fly fishing or tracking wildlife, the steep learning curve can feel overwhelming for beginners or those without a seasoned guide.

Not all hunting and fishing spots are created equal, and finding the best location can be a challenge. Many individuals are unsure where to go or how to even begin researching places that offer good opportunities for their desired hunt or catch. For some, it might mean traveling to remote areas, which can be daunting and require significant time, effort, and knowledge of the land.

For many, the outdoors can feel like an intimidating place, especially if you're venturing into it alone. Without the right knowledge of the land, wildlife, and equipment, safety can quickly become a concern. The fear of getting lost, injured, or encountering dangerous wildlife often deters people from setting out on their own.

The Challenge of Equipment and Gear

Hunting and fishing require a significant investment in equipment. Not everyone has the right gear, and for beginners, purchasing or renting equipment can be expensive. The thought of buying expensive gear only to find that it’s not right for the trip can be daunting.

People often struggle to find the time for a lengthy DIY trip due to busy work schedules, family commitments, or simply not knowing how to block out the right time for the trip. Moreover, planning these trips requires a lot of lead time to make sure that you're not missing critical seasons or locations.

Getting to your hunting or fishing destination can sometimes be more complicated than you might think. Remote locations may require special transportation, permits, or an understanding of local routes and conditions. For many, the complexity of these logistics can seem like a major hurdle to overcome.

Finally, a big deterrent for many is the fear of failure. Hunting and fishing can sometimes mean going home empty-handed, which can feel discouraging for those who haven’t yet built confidence in their skills. The idea of investing time and money into a trip only to come back with no game or catch is enough to make some rethink their plans.
